The event showcases the value our industry adds throughout the fragrance value chain and the wider economy and society and provides an opportunity to discuss, exchange ideas and network, and to enjoy the positive emotions we all derive from scent.
A public, big-picture 'Open Forum' is the centerpiece of the event, while we also hold more technical briefing and discussion sessions known as the 'Knowledge Exchange'.
Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, IFRA decided to make the Global Fragrance Summit a virtual, online event held on 2-4 March 2021.
The event was open and free to all, welcoming members, partners and all those who are interested in the role fragrance plays as a safe and essential part of people’s lives.
More than 500 people joined the virtual event, with the theme 'Sharing ideas, moving forward'.
The main focus of the event was the unexpected social, economic and political change brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Coronavirus has radically transformed the way we live and work, presenting new challenges to us all, while also being an accelerant for innovation and creativity.
Long-established consumer habits have been shaken up and the political kaleidoscope shaken - which in turn is impacting regulatory landscapes and action on issues such as climate change.
The 2021 Global Fragrance Summit examined the state of play for the fragrance industry in these turbulent times, as well as its future direction.
The Knowledge Exchange sessions dug into the regulatory implications of our turbulent times, focusing on the impact of existing and new regulations around the world and a renewed emphasis on regulatory and voluntary sustainability initiatives by governments and private sector.
In our Open Forum session, we looked at the impact of COVID-19 on our industry and how it can remain innovative and be a positive force for environmental, social and economic sustainability as we slowly emerge from the pandemic.
We also investigated the role artificial intelligence plays in our industry, and how we balance its benefits with the need for human creativity. And we examined changing consumer tastes and consider how to meet individual expectations.
The keynote address at the Summit was given by IFRA Chairman Emeritus Michael Carlos.
He spoke on the theme, 'Sustainability and innovation in the fragrance industry post-COVID-19'.
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a major impact on the fragrance industry. While hard-hit sectors like fine fragrance seek to recover their market share, once the pandemic is over there may be more fundamental changes in the approach of our business. How will the post-pandemic era affect our business?
