Brazil opens familiarization period for SisGen 3.0

Brazil began a 60-day user familiarization period for SisGen 3.0 on 1 October 2026. The updated software for the country’s genetic heritage and associated traditional knowledge management system was approved through Genetic Heritage Management Council (CGen) Resolution No. 53, published on 28 September 2026.

According to the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change, the software will offer English-language resources and functionality for foreign users. The approved functionalities also cover registration arrangements under Decree No. 13,014/2026, allowing Brazilian research institutions to register qualifying access activities undertaken by foreign legal entities with which they have no scientific collaboration.

The familiarization period does not constitute the system’s official launch or trigger deadlines linked to the new functionalities. These deadlines will begin upon publication of a separate act by the CGen Executive Secretariat, following completion of familiarization, data migration and technical adjustments. The resolution sets no fixed launch date, and the current SisGen remains fully operational during the transition.
