On 30 October 2026, Leon Huang, Senior Advisor, Asia North at the International Fragrance Association (IFRA), presented the IFRA Standards and risk-based fragrance safety stewardship at the 2026 China New-form Detergent Products Development Conference & China Detergent Products Safety Assessment Seminar in Nanchang, China.
The event brought together around 200 participants, including representatives of raw material suppliers, detergent manufacturers, fragrance houses, regulatory authorities and local industry associations.
The timing is significant. China's new Detergent Safety Standard, GB 26396-2026, is set for implementation and references GB/T 22731 as its compliance requirement for fragrance use. GB/T 22731 is currently aligned with the 50th Amendment to the IFRA Standards and will soon be updated to the 52nd Amendment.
This makes a shared understanding of how fragrance ingredients are assessed for safe use in detergents – and of the risk-based approach behind the IFRA Standards – all the more important. Early familiarity with the IFRA Standards will help all stakeholders prepare for compliance with the new safety standard.
