Since joining IFRA in August 2000, Matthias has played a central role in guiding the development of the IFRA Standards, the cornerstone of safe fragrance use worldwide. His scientific leadership and collaborative spirit have helped shape a credible, transparent, and responsive approach to fragrance safety that continues to evolve in step with new knowledge and public expectations.

“Matthias has been instrumental in advancing IFRA’s widening mission”, said Alexander Mohr, President of IFRA. “His deep scientific knowledge, tireless engagement, and steady commitment to open dialogue have helped strengthen IFRA’s role as the global reference point for fragrance safety. On behalf of the entire organization and our members, I thank him for his dedication and enduring contribution to our work”.

Over the course of his tenure, Matthias has seen the fragrance industry grow and change, from growing regulation in many regions to increasing demands for transparency and sustainability. He has also been a key advocate for the importance of science-based policymaking, leading numerous projects that bring together industry experts, academics, regulators, and civil society representatives.

One such initiative, the International Dialogue for the Evaluation of Allergens (IDEA), remains a proud milestone. Launched under Matthias' leadership, IDEA fostered an unprecedented level of cooperation between stakeholders to improve safety assessment in perfumery.

Reflecting on his 25 years with IFRA, Matthias said, “It has been a unique and rewarding journey - full of developments and challenges. Having trained as a perfumer, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside passionate colleagues and partners to uphold a shared goal: ensuring that fragrance remains safe, sustainable and respected. I’m proud of what we’ve built together, and grateful for the friendships and experiences I’ve gained along the way”.

Matthias continues to bring the same curiosity, humility, and scientific rigor to his work, ensuring that IFRA’s approach remains robust and future-ready.

The IFRA team thanks Matthias for his outstanding service and look forward to his continued dedicated service.
