Europe enters decisive phase on Chemicals Omnibus VI, says IFRA’s Director for Europe Aurélie Perrichet in new video

IFRA’s Director for Europe, Aurélie Perrichet, highlights a critical moment for the future of safe and creative fragrance in Europe as discussions advance on the Chemicals Omnibus.

Europe is entering a decisive phase in a debate that will determine how key fragrance ingredients can continue to be used once they are classified. With millions of people using fragranced products every day, expectations remain high: products must be safe, high quality and trustworthy. Consumers also expect Europe to protect the creativity, cultural heritage and innovative spirit that underpin the fragrance sector.

The European Commission has proposed a science-based solution to address long-standing challenges in the classification process. The proposal keeps safety at the centre while providing clarity on several criteria that were previously undefined. This new level of clarity offers a more predictable, workable and safe path forward for all stakeholders, from regulators to manufacturers to small enterprises.

Members of the European Parliament now have a unique opportunity to reinforce this balanced approach. Ensuring that rules remain anchored in science, that alternatives are genuinely viable, and that implementation timelines are realistic will be essential. Thousands of small and family-owned companies – including perfumers, ingredient producers and artisanal creators – depend on a framework that supports both safety and innovation.

This moment is an opportunity for Europe to demonstrate leadership. By supporting a sector that brings cultural, economic and creative value, policymakers can help safeguard the products people know, use and trust.
